First ever youth theatre for South Woodham

THE first ever youth theatre in South Woodham Ferrers is to be launched this autumn.

Chelmsford Council is launching a new theatre group after it found massive demand at its Chelmsford-based group.

The Chelmsford Civic Youth Theatre at South Woodham Ferrers will start on September 11, meeting at 5.45pm to 7.45pm every Thursday evening during term time.

The group is for children aged between 12 and 21-years-old and will be held at the village hall in Hullbridge Road, as part of a drive to make sure young people have access to drama activities.

South Woodham's youth theatre will be connected to Chelmsford's Civic Theatre and follow the same course as the Chelmsford group.

Emma Finlayson, senior arts development officer for the council, has been working towards the launch of the South Woodham youth theatre.

She said: "We know that in South Woodham there are a few dance and musical theatre groups, but we knew it was the kind of activity that young people would be attracted to and a really good opportunity.

"The aim is to produce a high quality standard of youth theatre in the local community and to create opportunities for personal, social and education development, through participation in arts activity and use of theatrical processes.

"The youth theatre will work on a number of exciting activities and projects, which will include script-based work leading to a production at the Cramphorn theatre."

Other activities for the group will include special projects and workshops with theatre professionals, working on theatrical skills, devised and improvised work, some half-term sessions and theatre trips.
