An Essex Police officer has denied kicking an arrested man in the head.
PC John Senior attended a misconduct hearing at Chelmsford Civic Centre yesterday, after he was accused of using excessive force during the incident at Chelmsford Police Station on November 1 2016.
However, PC Senior said that he was acting in self defence and has denied breaching standards of authority, respect, and courtesy.
CCTV footage shown at the hearing shows a struggle between the two men, with the arrested man described as acting "strangely". At the time of the incident, he was reportedly being watched for his own welfare.
The hearing heard that PC Senior intervened as the man tried to strangle himself with his own hands, however became fearful for his own safety, causing him to act in self defence.
The hearing is set to continue.
