Police believe arsonists set fire to a home in Basildon in the early hours of this morning.
The attack took place at around 2am in Rochester Way, Basildon.
Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a first floor maisonette.
A spokesman for the Essex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Two crews from Basildon and one from Rayleigh Weir were called to Rochester Way at 1.57am this morning.
"On arrival firefighters reported that a front door had been set alight and the fire was out on arrival.
"Firefighters remained at the scene to ensure it was safe and assist police in an investigation."
No-one was injured but damage was caused to the property.
