A teenager, who covered himself in petrol and set himself alight, died from multiple organ failure, an inquest heard.

Obaid Dajran, who was living in Qatar at the time of his death, died at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford on September 26 from multiple organ failure after a decision was made to begin end of life care.

Obaid, who had a history of medical conditions, set himself alight on June 30 and was admitted to hospital in Qatar.

The inquest heard how Obaid, who was 18 years old when he died, had a crush on a maid and was refusing to take his medication.

He was transferred to the St Andrews Burns Unit at Broomfield Hospital on September 4.

Staff had trouble feeding him and he was malnourished as a result of his burns.

On September 22, a CT scan shown that he had cerebral edema and he died at the hospital on September 26.

With the evidence provided, the coroner came to an open conclusion.

Assistant Coroner, Michelle Brown, said: "I can't prove to the required standard that this gentleman decided to take his own life.

"I have heard how he had a crush on a maid and that he refused to take his medication. But in the absence of anything to confirm this was an intentional act, I must record an open concluson."
