This new year brought the announcement that the government plans to extend its Starter Home Land Fund (giving first time buyers a 20 per cent discount on market value).

Basildon has already seen this scheme piloted. Similarly the controversial development of Dunton Garden Village has moved a step closer.

Whatever we feel about one development we are reminded that we live in an area where there are simply not enough affordable houses for all those who wish to have a home.

We all know that each new year comes with new announcements but not much new revelation.

The catalogue of failure in finding a solution to the housing crisis spans all recent governments.

Each year the situation gets worse and hope fades further.

Every January is reserved by the church for the celebration of Epiphany. A sudden revelation?

Well, not exactly. But the time we remember the wise men who sought out the child Jesus.

Following a star they are taken to the village of Bethlehem. Just 11 days after the birth for us.

Their journey may have taken years.

They seek a king to pay homage. But find him, not in a palace, but in a stable.

The visit of the wise men signals a period of flight for Jesus. Mary and Joseph travel to Egypt to protect him from jealous King Herod. Jesus becomes a refugee, homeless again.

A theme is set of a person, the Son of God, who finds no home in this world.

As we enter this new year let us reflect on all those we know within our families, our communities and beyond who don’t have a place to call home.

Let us pray that this new year the announcements and the journey will bring a new revelation that many more can find a home.
