POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man attempted to drag a woman into woods.

The 39-year-old woman was walking along the Bunny Walks in Chelmsford, near First Avenue, at 7.50pm yesterday.

She was walking in the Springfield direction when a man holding what is thought to be a knife approached her.

There was an altercation in which she fought him off. She was punched in the face but did not suffer any lasting injuries.

She ran off and called police.

Officers carried out a search of the area and a 38-year-old man from Chelmsford was arrested in connection with the incident, and is currently in custody for questioning.

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw anybody acting suspiciously in the area between 7.15pm and 8.15pm.

Police will increase reassurance patrols in the Bunny Walks area and ask anyone with information about the incident to contact Dc Jane Chapple on 101.
