A DEVELOPER has unveiled this graphic, showing how the abandoned Britvic factory site in Westway will look after renovation – and it includes two supermarket giants.

Aldi and Marks and Spencer are two of the stores expected to set up shop, with another six retail units yet to be filled.

The revelation came after Chelmsford City Council sold off the land to developers Exton Estates for a seven-figure fee last month.

The deal was struck without planning permission, how - ever, the new developers are working around the clock with new owners Aberdeen Asset Management, to augment fu - ture plans.

Developer James Mawson said: “It is a significant devel - opment for two reasons. Firstly it will get the former Britvic site back into use and create jobs and most importantly it will create a mixed-use devel - opment.

“As well as the retail, let’s not forget the industrial area that we are looking to build and that hasn’t been done in Chelmsford for a while. There will be job creation on the site but it will also allow existing businesses to stay in Chelms - ford and expand and grow.”

Chelmsford City Council leader Roy Whitehead said re - tail units, could help cover for the 250 jobs lost when the fac - tory closed in 2014.

He said: “Negotiating the sale of the land was complex. But we were careful to sell it to a de - veloper who planned to use the area for retail, rather than just storage. We haven’t received an official planning application yet, but the new proposals look like they could breathe more life into that area.”

Mr Whitehead added Chelms - ford City Council is looking to plough the money raised by selling the site towards the £20m Riverside Swimming Pool redevelopment project.
