They were called to the A12 at Kelvedon shortly before 2.30pm on Thursday, May 19, following reports that a car was being driven towards Colchester on the London bound carriageway.
Officers from Chelmsford & Stanway’s Roads Policing Units attended and found the car, a white MG Campen, at Prested Hall.
The 85-year-old driver has been reported for driving offences and has voluntarily surrendered her licence. Officers drove the woman back to her home in Gosfield.
Roads Policing Sergeant Sgt Colin Shead said: "The vehicle was being driven the wrong way down one of the county’s busiest roads.
"It was a miracle that there wasn’t a collision and that we not dealing with another fatality on the county’s roads.”
