A new walk-in work experience hub has been launched as Work Experience Week gets underway.

The service is run by Essex County Council’s Youth Service, which provided young people in Essex with more than 15,000 hours of work experience in the first year following the Work Experience Team’s inception in June 2013.

Based in Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, the new hub will provide young people and their parents with easy access to help and support finding work placements.

It will also help improve links with Essex businesses, allowing them to develop local talent and skills in their sectors.

The walk-in service, which will work closely with Chelmsford College, was officially opened by Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, today.

He said: “Good quality work experience can play an important role in a young person’s development and valuable preparation for working life.

“Our youth service has already been successful in providing hundreds of fantastic placements across Essex, many resulting in future employment or apprenticeships.

“The new work experience hub will improve access to that support and raise the profile of the services available. Moving forward, I am confident it will become a real one-stop-shop for young people looking for work placement opportunities.”

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Essex County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, added: “Essex is blessed with some excellent businesses across a range of different sectors.

“Ensuring the next generation of young people have the skills and experience needed to allow those businesses to grow is vital if our county is to continue to thrive.

“This new walk-in service will allow even more businesses to help shape the skill sets of employees of the future and once again shows that Essex means business.”
