An investigation will be launched after a man was found dead in his cell at Chelmsford Prison.

Ben Cathorne, 28, was found unresponsive in his cell just before 6am on Sunday and despite the best efforts of staff, who performed CPR, and paramedics he was declared dead shortly after.

An Essex Police spokesman has confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "HMP Chelmsford prisoner Ben Cathorne (dob 21/7/87) was found unresponsive in his cell at 5.53am on Sunday, October 4.

"Staff attempted CPR and paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead shortly after.

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

A spokesman from the ambulance service added: "The ambulance service was called at just before 6am on October 4 to Springfield Road, Chelmsford.

"A rapid response vehicle and ambulance officer attended to a man in his late 20s who was unconscious and not breathing.

"Sadly he died at the scene."
