A RUGBY club have honoured a former member by naming a road after him.

Robin Smylie became a member of Chelmsford Rugby Club in the 1960s.

He played for the team and in time became the chairman of the club’s fundraising committee.

His efforts saw the club raise enough money fora£650,000 clubhouse and later an extension to the building in Coronation Park.

Mr Smylie, who suffered from cancer for six years, died in March last year, aged 71.

Now, his beloved club have named the new approach road to the clubhouse after their long-time supporter.

Smylie Way was officially opened by Mr Smylie’s wife, Jill, in a ceremony attended by family, friends and club members, see below.

Stuart Bolton, 65, publicity officer and member of the fundraising committee, said: “I met Robin when I joined the club myself in 1969.

“He wasaterrific worker. When he did the fundraising, he was very persistent and would keep bugging people to donate towards the clubhouse and did a great job.

“He was the driving force behind the fundraising team.

“Without him, it would have been touch or go if we got the new clubhouse.

“He gave a lot of his time to the fundraising.”
