Wingate & Finchley 1–2 Canvey Island
From Summers Lane
Ryman Premier League
A controversial late strike from top scorer Martin Tuohy handed Canvey a 2-1 win at high-flying Wingate & Finchley.
Tuohy seemed to knock the ball over the goal-line with his hand in the 89th minute, but Wingate protests fell on deaf ears.
The Gulls have been in impressive recent form recently and were searching for their third win in as many matches, albeit against the team who had knocked island rivals Concord out of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Canvey went behind after just 10 minutes of the second-half. Centre-back Ahmet Rifat pounced after a corner wasn’t cleared to open the scoring.
And despite coming close to falling further behind, the Gulls netted the next goal as Richard Halle powered home after his header had come back off the bar.
But Tuohy had the last laugh as he guided the ball home with minutes to spare, despite loud protestations he had done so with an arm.
Canvey Island: Gough, Dumas, Halle, Sheehan, Eyong, Yiga, Agyakwa (Odeniji), Poole, Chatting, Tuohy, Carvalho (Gilchrist)
