HULLBRIDGE Sports striker Luke Hornsley is hoping he can fire his team to their greatest upset of all when they visit Grays Athletic in the FA Cup tomorrow.

The 28-year-old hot shot has already hit six goals this term, including a key strike against Maldon & Tiptree in the preliminary round of this year’s competition.

And having already knocked a Ryman One North outfit out of the Cup, Hornsley sees no reason why Grays can’t be the next side to fall to giant killers Sports.

“Everyone is buzzing about it,” he said. “Everyone loves the FA Cup and everyone knows about the FA Cup as well. We have the league and other cup competitions but there is nothing quite like this.

“We do have quite a good record against the bigger teams in cup competitions and we did well in the FA Vase last year too (beating high-ranked AFC Rushden & Diamonds).

“We just see matches like this as an opportunity and we don’t mind being the underdogs. We have a chance to show what we can do, and I think people are beginning to take notice after what we did against Maldon.”

Hornsley’s strike against Maldon was his first ever in the competition.

But he says netting at Mill Field and causing an upset would eclipse that, although he admits he didn’t quite know the size of the challenge the Essex Senior league minnows were facing.

“My goal against Maldon was my first in the competition and that was a really good feeling,” he said. “Getting another one would be great but it will be tough. I didn’t know they were going so well in the league until the other day but we have to forget about that as I suppose it is a bit daunting.”

Hornsley is one of the team’s elder statesmen and will be helping guide the team tomorrow, with a number of youngsters likely to be given a chance to shine.

He is even older than manager Rob Hodgson and first-team coach Aaron Hunwicks, but he says that means nothing.

“It’s quite funny,” he said. “But Rob and Aaron have the full backing of everyone and we are doing really well.

“We are all just good mates.”
