CANVEY Island defender Steve Sheehan says nothing less than a win at Billericay Town will make up for a disappointing start to the season.

The centre-back, 25, heads back to New Lodge, this afternoon for the first time since he, Richard Halle and Glenn Poole left for the Gulls in the summer.

And, following Saturday’s win over Enfield Town, their first three points of the campaign, Sheehan says another win today is a must after a disappointing start to the season.

“I’m very excited about going back,” said Sheehan. “I was only at Billericay for one season but I really enjoyed it and made some good mates there. It also makes it a bit more of a personal battle for me as it is a chance to get one over them as well. It’s good for banter!

“It has been a very disappointing start,” he went on. “We have massively underachieved so far and although we went on a run of draws, the team wants to win. I always come away with the hump when we don’t win but we should be doing better and we need six points this weekend.

“There have been a lot of fine margins. We need a bit of luck and often when you get that rub of the green it can push you on and change the course of your season.”

Sheehan will be hoping for a more successful return to this former club than his last, as he was sent off for Town on his first appearance back at East Thurrock United.

But he has more than a good performance and result on his mind. Sheehan is regarded as one of the dressing room’s practical joker’s, and he said he was planning another wind-up after seeing his former manage.

“I still get on well with Craig (Edwards). I sent him a message saying I didn’t know he had taken up wrestling,” he laughed. “I am going to try and get hold of one and wear it to the match. I just don’t know where they sell that sort of thing!”
