Canvey Island 2–0 Enfield Town

MARTIN Tuohy was the star of the show as his two first-half goals handed Canvey Island their first win of the season against Enfield Town.
Two strikes, before he later went off injured, took Tuohy’s tally for the season to six and gave the Gulls the boost they needed heading into Monday’s derby with Billericay Town.
Canvey had struggled for form in the early weeks, having failed to win any of their opening five games. They had taken three draws in that time, but manager Danny Heale was targeting three points against struggling Enfield, who had lost four of their five games.
And they got the start they desired.
Town goalkeeper Nathan McDonald was hassled into a mistake by the lively Dan Gilchrist and he provided Tuohy with one of his simplest goals of the season, his fifth in the last six games.
Conor Gough, signed on Friday from island rivals Concord Rangers, had been a spectator between the posts up to this point. But he was perhaps lucky to escape unpunished after Bobby Devyne went down under his challenge. However, Devyne was booked for a dive.
And seven minutes later, the lead was doubled. The marauding Tambeson Eyong saw his cross-shot tucked home by the irrepressible Tuohy.
Richard Halle headed wide as Canvey turned the screw, with Gough denying Devyne shortly before the interval.
The stopper was proving his worth with a terrific save to deny Micky Parcell, but Canvey were looking comfortable having got their two-goal lead.
And with 15 minutes to go, they were playing against 10 men. Inexplicably, Alex Cathline grabbed Steve Sheehan around the throat in an off-the-ball incident and was dismissed.
Canvey saw the match out well to complete a good afternoon's work.
Canvey Island: Gough, Sheehan, Chatting, Eyong, Poole (Pitty), Halle, Yiga, Adeniji, Gilchrist (Lawson), Tuohy (Curran), Agyakwa
