THE RIVER Chelmer will be filled with colourful boats and racers in fancy dress as the Dragon Boat challenge for J’s Hospice gets under way.

Thirty-foot-long dragon boats, decorated in traditional Chinese style, will be furiously raced up the river by up to ten paddlers during the challenge, which starts at 11.30am on Sunday.

At least ten teams of brightlypainted boats will be taking on the 200m course on the river at Backnang Square.

The event is in aid of J’s Hospice, a Chelmsford-based charity which provides respite and hospice care for young adults with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.

Laura Birden, the J’s event organiser, said: “We are sure that crews and spectators alike will enjoyafantastic day, with races every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day.

“There will also be plenty of entertainment on the river and surrounding area as part of the Chelmsford Ideas Hub River Festival, such as boat trips provided by Blackwater Boats, Chelmsford Sea Cadets and exciting kayak sprint races by Chelmsford Canoe Club and much more.

“We hope to raise a significant sum for the J’s Hospice.”
