Sandford Mill is calling for volunteers to get involved with science and history!

Situated on the bank of the River Chelmer, to the south of Chelmer Village, Sandford Mill is a fascinating education centre, a treasure trove of archives and industrial collections.

From March to November, it opens to schools as a unique science learning resource with taught hands-on sessions.

There are also several special open days, where visitors can explore the story of Chelmsford’s industrial heritage and the inventions that drove it. The Mill is surrounded by a large wildlife habitat, and wildlife walks are held in summer.

The help of Sandford’s team of volunteers is invaluable in running these events.

Cabinet Member for Parks and Leisure, Councillor Ray Ride, said, “We have a strong volunteer presence on Monday mornings who achieve wonderful things and we want to increase this, welcoming volunteers across the week.

"It’s great fun and if you’re into science or history – or both – you’ll be among likeminded people.”

Volunteers help to make things, work around the site and help with the collections.

They help alongside organisations like the Friends of Chelmsford Museums, Chelmsford Amateur Radio, the Marconi Veterans’ Association and the Susan Trust, who are restoring the last wooden Chelmer Barge for mooring at the Mill.

Interested? Come along to the Volunteer Open Day at Sandford Mill on Sunday 16 August, 2pm – 5pm. You can meet the Museums staff, have a look around and decide whether you would like to be involved.
