Doing our best for town’s spruce up

11:21am Sunday 8th April 2007

A SPRING clean has taken place in Chelmsford.

More than 80 volunteers took part in a litter pick in the town centre last Saturday, March 31.

The event, organised by Chelmsford Council, was felt to be a great success, with a great deal of rubbish being collected in the warm spring sunshine.

The volunteers picked up one skip full of rubbish, 302 black sacks of litter, six bikes, 12 traffic cones, ten shopping trolleys, three car batteries, eight road signs, a radiator and a pushchair.

The litter pick concentrated on the areas by the side of the rivers that run through the town. It began at the car park in Wharf Road and continued up the river as far as the Bunny Walk.

Jackie Lane, the borough council's neighbourhood environmental action team officer, said, "It was great that so many people came along on Saturday, and I was especially pleased to see lots of children in attendance with their parents.

"These sorts of community events are an excellent way of instilling in children the importance of caring for their local environment.

The day was also great fun, with the lovely weather helping to create a really nice atmosphere amongst everyone who turned up."
