HULLBRIDGE Sports ladies are celebrating a stellar debut season after winning the league title in stunning fashion.

Led by Lisa Frost, the women’s team only came into being last summer as Hullbridge looked to branch out into women’s football.

And it has been a remarkable 12 months for the team. Sports won 13 of their 16 matches, losing only twice and finishing with a positive goal difference of +59.

An 8-0 win over Leigh Athletic on the final day ensured they took the Essex Women’s Division One title, finishing a point ahead of Eastern Avenue.

And Frost, 46, in her first managerial post, said she had still not got over the excitement of last weekend’s result.

“We are over the moon,” she said. “I am still getting messages from everyone saying they can’t believe we have won it and “did it happen?”

“This is a team that works incredibly hard for each other and genuinely enjoys spending time with one another.

“They want to do well and to go as far as we have already shows what this team can achieve.”

There have been a number of star turns for the Lower Road outfit this season, including a return to form for Danni Dorrington, 29, who played a key role in midfield having suffered a horrific broken ankle two years ago and 17-year-old Broghan Kelly, who scored 24 goals.

Frost enjoyed a successful career as a player herself, playing for 15 years at Southend United Ladies between 1991 and 2006.

Now married with two children, Frost spoke with the senior management at Hullbridge last summer about leading the new women’s team – a challenge she was more than happy to embrace eight years after retiring from the game.

Although she said she expected to wait a bit longer before she got her hands on the league trophy.

“It’s quite a feeling,” she said. “The team has worked so hard and they deserve this success. You only need to look at C&K Basildon Ladies team as a successful model for women’s football and Steve Tilson has done a brilliant job there. We would love to be that successful one day.”

A women’s reserve team will be introduced this summer as the team continues to expand.
