PAUL Hutchinson has been named the new Mayor of Chelmsford.

Councillor Hutchinson has been an elected Chelmsford City Councillor for 11 years, the past four representing North Springfield.

He takes over the role from Councillor Bob Villa, and will joined by his partner Ali Murad as Escort.

Mr Hutchinson has held various positions including being chairman of the Governance Committee and in 2012/2013 was Deputy Mayor.

He has chosen the YMCA Chelmsford as his charity for the year.

Mr Hutchinson said: “It is a huge honour to be Mayor of the city that has been my home for most of my life. I have seen Chelmsford grow and prosper over the past forty years.

“When I was Deputy Mayor a few years ago and in my voluntary work with schools, the YMCA, the Speak Out Challenge, and in other areas, I have seen first-hand the enormous contribution that young people make to our city; alongside those who need a little encouragement to realise the opportunities available to them.

“I am, therefore, making the theme of my year of office: ‘Young People – Unleash the Potential.’”

Mr Hutchinson appointed Councillor Philip Wilson to be his Deputy and he will be supported by his wife Angela as Deputy Mayoress.

Mr Wilson said “I consider being asked to be Deputy Mayor for the year a great privilege. Bringing up a young family in England’s youngest city constantly reminds me of what an exciting and vibrant place Chelmsford is and its people, young and old, are what make it so.”
