Peacehaven & Telscombe 0-2 Billericay Town

BILLERICAY Town beat Peacehaven & Telscombe 2-0 to win their first match in a month and keep alive their very faint play-off hopes.

Town manager Craig Edwards has already given up hope of making the top five, with Billericay needing to win their remaining three games and hoping other results go in their favour.

Goals from Ricky Sappleton and Rowan Liburd gave Town the points in a match that ebbed and flowed throughout.

The burly Sappleton had already fizzed an effort wide before the deadlock was broken.

Town took the lead after only 14 minutes when Sappleton took advantage of an error from home goalkeeper Anthony Di Bernardo, who could only shovel away captain Glenn Poole’s shot to pass into an empty net.

The striker shot wide soon after but Town made it to the break with a one goal advantage.

In the second-half, Peacehaven should have drawn level when substitute Jordan Stubbing bore down on goal, but Joe Wright did brilliantly to push the ball away from close range.

Steve Sheehan sent a header crashing off the crossbar with 17 minutes remaining but the second goal wasn’t long in coming.

Wright’s goal-kick was flicked on by Sappleton and Liburd was put in the clear to round the goalkeeper and finish well.

Taku Mashingaidze came on for his Billericay debut and almost marked the occasion with a goal as his shanked drive dropped inches wide.

The win leaves Town 11th, with a game in hand on many of the sides above them.
