GRAYS Athletic 3-1 Wingate & Finchley

From Mill Field

Ryman Premier League

GRAYS Athletic surged into the play-off places with a 3-2 win over direct rivals Wingate & Finchley.

Both teams started the evening on 64 points but Blues took the points after an impressive showing to extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches in all competitions.

A brace from Joao Carlos and a penalty from James Stevens was enough for Mark Bentley's team to move into the top five.

WIngate started well and created several good openings before Grays took the lead against the run of play. Carlos ran down the left and fired a fine effort inside the far post.

Jordan Wilson came close to doubling the advantage before Stevens scored from the spot to ease the home team's nerves.

David Knight slid in at the far post to halve the deficit on the stroke of half-time.

The second-half was a scrappy affair but the away team couldn't force a leveller before Carlos rounded the goalkeeper to add his second and put some daylight between the two teams.

Knight scored a late penalty but it was too little too late for Wingate.

Grays are a point ahead of Enfield Town with four games left this term.
