Giant striker Enoch Showunmi says Canvey Island “play football the right way” after joining the club.

The 6ft 5in forward signed on a dual-registration deal from Conference South side Wealdstone on Monday, making his debut for the club only 24 hours later in the Gulls 2-1 defeat to East Thurrock United.

But Showunmi, who has been capped twice by Nigeria, impressed for Danny Heale’s side in his first 90 minutes of football for three months.

And the 32-year-old says he is confident of doing well.

“It is a good little club,” said Showunmi. “What impresses me is this is a team that wants to play football the right way but we are just coming up a bit short.

“From what the manager has told me tonight’s performance is symptomatic of some of the problems Canvey have had this year. If we can sure up in certain areas we can do well this season.”

Showunmi impressed the fans with his performance against the Rocks, but felt he should have opened his account on his debut.

“I should certainly have scored,” he said. “I had a good chance in the first half but their player made a block and it is just one of those things.”

He has also played more than 300 professional games for Bristol City, Leeds United, Tranmere Rovers and Plymouth Argyle, and he wants to ensure the benefits of his decade playing professional football do not go to waste.

“There are a lot of young players at the club and I want to use my experience to help push them on. I feel I can do that.

“I want to bring people into the game and link up with my teammates. We create chances so I am sure I can score goals while I am here.

“This is my first game in three months,” he said. “I haven’t played 90 minutes for a long time so I was never going to be at my best tonight. After a few training sessions with the boys I will offer more but for me I just need some minutes at the moment.”

l Canvey are without Jay Curran and Kevin Dobinson (both hamstring) for tomorrow’s match with Met Police. They are set to come face-to-face with ex-defender Rob Bartley.
