A CAKE artist from Chelmsford walked away with two gold medals at the world’s biggest cake competition.

Sarah Thomas, 42, of Meon Close, runs the Cupcake Oven baking school in the city.

She entered two categories at the Cake International at the NEC in Birmingham, so was delighted to go home with the golds for her wedding cake and cupcakes.

She said: “I’m especially pleased with the result as the cupcakes class is the only tasted category, and so the cakes literally have to taste as good as they look!

“Wonderful feedback was received from the judges, who thought my cupcakes were delicious, while the decoration was an ‘innovative and clean design’.”

She added: “The judge said she knew my wedding cake deserved a gold medal as soon as she saw it and said she loved looking at it. The judging panel loved the detail and use of colour in both entries.”

Mum-of-two Sarah also received congratulations from cake royalty Eddie Spence, who is the royal sugar artist, whose work includes Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding cake.

Sarah added: “The wedding cake took about a month of consolidated work. I was sketching designs on holiday!”
