CRAIG Edwards has said his youthful Billericay Town side are showing signs of returning to their best form after a difficult few months.

Town beat an in-form Harlow Town 3-2 in the fourth round of the Essex Senior Cup on Tuesday night to be the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.

Goals from Ryan Scott and a brace from Afolabi Obafemi were enough to see Town progress, with the winner coming in injury time And it followed Billericay’s 1-0 win at Tonbridge Angels on Saturday, their first league triumph in two months, with the average age of the side less than 21.

But Edwards has called on his team to follow up the wins with back-to-back home wins in the league this weekend.

“We have been unlucky these past four weeks,” said Edwards. “The team has showed real signs of progression and we are finally getting the results our performances deserve.

“For such a young team to be giving as much as they are makes me proud. The enthusiasm is there and winning at Harlow is a great result.”

Harlow have been in superb form this season, and are currently unbeaten in 18 league matches.

And Edwards believes his side are in a good position to go far in the competition.

“We are the first side in this round and that is great,” he said. “We enjoy these cup runs and are keen to go further. But there are still some very good sides in this tournament. The likes of Chelmsford City, Concord Rangers and Dagenham & Redbridge are still in it, but we have played well and can go far.

Ricky Sappleton came off the bench in the final ten minutes, having missed the last month through injury, and Edwards is hopeful he and Obafemi can strike up a relationship.

He added striker Rowan Liburd may stay at Thamesmead until Christmas, after a successful month on loan at the Ryman North side.

“He has done very well, but I don’t want him to come back and then sit on the bench. That wouldn’t be fair on him and we want to get the best out of him.

“Every game is an adventure at the moment and we can’t wait for VCD Athletic on Saturday.”
