LEWIS Sparrow is relishing the chance of taking on two of the league’s hottest marksmen when Great Wakering Rovers line-up against Wroxham tonight.

The Rovers captain will be faced with the difficult job of keeping 18-goal strike pairing Christy Finch and Jamie Forshaw quiet at Burroughs Park, with Finch second in the goal-scoring charts (with 11 strikes) behind only Harlow Town’s Alex Read.

And Sparrow insists he is not fazed by the challenge, only aiming to prolong Rovers’ impressive recent defensive record in the league.

Dan Trenkel’s side were brushed aside 4-0 by Ware in the FA Trophy on Saturday, but have kept two clean sheets in a row in the Ryman North, after overcoming a difficult league start which saw them propping up the division.

“I love a challenge,” said the 27-year-old. “We have been good at the back in recent weeks but we will probably change things around after a difficult result at the weekend. Wroxham have some good players but we aren’t going to focus on them too much.

“We will just approach it like any game and we know if we keep a clean sheet we can’t lose the game.

“We were poor at the weekend,” Sparrow continued. “We had a red card early on and we had to change the formation and that upset our rhythm. But a 4-0 score line was harsh on us without a doubt.

“But being out of the cup, as well as we wanted to do in that tournament, means we can give our total concentration to the league.”

Sparrow has formed an impressive partnership at the back with Stuart Hepburn and he feels the team has a good balance, with a win against 9th placed Wroxham potentially good enough to lift them to 16th in league.

“We are pleased with the team at the moment,” said the skipper. “We have Trenks who can come into the team and hold the ball up and each of our players have different qualities that we can use.

“We are looking forward to the game and are confident of a good result.”
