A YOUNG MMA star from Great Wakering says she has one goal in the sport – to become world champion.

Fifteen-year-old Marisa Charalambous joined the Southend Combat Academy 18 months ago and has become a sensation down at the Westcliff-based club.

Accomplished in a range of MMA disciplines, the teenage fighter has been described by her coach and the owner of the academy, Simon Dempsey, as “one of the most naturally talented people I have ever taught”.

This follows her remarkable success at the MAASIF (Martial Arts All Styles International Federation) British Open last month, where she beat a 23-year-old opponent in the grappling final, while competing in a higher weight category.

And Marisa says she was inspired to take up MMA by her younger nephew Mason, also a member of Southend Combat Academy.

“I love my training,” said Marisa, whose grandfather is from Greece.

“I would never have taken it up if it wasn’t for my nephew, but I am so glad I did.

“I enjoy fighting and enjoy learning,” she added. “I prefer grappling and boxing the most, but the best thing about it is I am able to express myself and that is important.”

Marisa will compete in three Thai Boxing competitions this year and coach Simon believes she has all the credentials to make a name for herself in the sport.

“She is remarkable,” he said. “To beat an opponent eight years her senior was brilliant and she had to enter into a higher weight category as her category (48kg) wasn’t an option.

“Marisa is like a sponge and takes everything on board. She is comfortable in a number of different styles and is a well-rounded mixed martial artist.

“I have no doubt she will go onto achieve great things.”
