BILLERICAY Town will boast a new strike force in their next league outing after manager Craig Edwards turned to the transfer market to re-juvenate his misfiring front line.

Edwards has brought in former striker Jacob Cleaver and Hullbridge Sports hotshot Liam Nash as well as ex-Concord Rangers winger Roman Michael-Percil and former Hayes & Yeading man Kameron English after admitting his current crop of strikers were failing to hit the mark.

And Cleaver and Nash have immediately impressed, scoring four times between them (including a Cleaver hat-trick) in Monday’s 8-2 League Cup demolition of Great Wakering Rovers.

Seedy Njie, another forward under scrutiny, scored twice in the win, with Steve Sheehan and an own goal adding to Rovers’ woe.

And Edwards admitted his team was looking very top-heavy, with Ricky Sappleton, Chris Benjamin, Junior Appiah and Rowan Liburd also on Town’s books.

“After our 2-1 defeat at Met Police on Saturday (Town’s fifth league loss in a row) I sat down and had a long hard chat with my assistants (Kevin Ramsay and Alex Fiddes),” said Edwards. “Even though we only lost in the last few minutes even if we had conceded minutes into the half I wouldn’t have thought we had a goal in us.

“My secretary and I spent all day Sunday looking around and I am confident we have a very exciting strike force now.

“I will speak to the strikers we have about how we will move forward, but we have too many at the moment.”

And Edwards said the new players had a lot to offer, reserving praise for Liam Nash and backing him to make the step up to Ryman Premier League level.

“It’s a big leap,” said the Town boss. “What I like about him is he knows the right areas to get into and he could have had a hat-trick, as he hit the bar and forced their keeper into a great save.

“But all the lads who came in impressed me. Jacob (Cleaver) scored a great hat-trick and Seedy (Njie) really showed some character to score twice as he was recovering from flu.”

Nash and English will both feature for Town in a friendly match against Barking this week while Michael-Percil and Cleaver will be in the squad for this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Weymouth.
