HUGE investment and big brand names coming to Chelmsford will revitalise the city centre, excited councillors have claimed.

It was recently revealed how retail giants John Lewis and Hugo Boss have signed up for the city’s new £120 million shopping centre planned for Bond Street.

Developer Aquila hopes to have the centre, which will create 450 jobs, open within two years.

Also on the cards for the city centre is a £1.2million development of Half Moon Square.

The council was due to meet this week to look at the plan which would also improve links between High Chelmer Shopping Centre and the High Street.

The square would also see the a solitary tree moved and “better seating” installed.

David Birch, director of policy at Essex Chambers of Commerce, said: “It’s a vote of confidence in the city and in its future.

“John Lewis at last is going to open and that is something that is very welcome.

“There’s been a lot of talk about it so to now have a date is great.

“We want people to come to the city and use and enjoy the facilities. People don’t always have to go to London.”

Councillor Neil Gulliver, in charge of economic development, was looking forward to the face of the city changing too. He said: “This is exciting because it shows the private sector is prepared to invest in the city’s future success.”
