JUST weeks after Tour De France, cycling fever has gripped the city with commuters being urged to jump on their bikes for Cycle To Work Day.

Hundreds of people took part in last year’s event – and this year the Cyclescheme-run initiative could be even more popular.

And for those that fancy a crack at doing what the likes of Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins do best, Cycle to Work Day is on Thursday, September 4.

Chelmsford City Council, are offering free breakfasts to employees who come to work by bike on that day.

Bike shops across the area, including Cycles UK on Victoria Road and Athlon Sport on Navigation Road, will be offering free bike checks from 7am to 9am on the day for those who are planning to dust off their old wheels.

The scheme aims to promote the cost and health benefits of regular cycling.

It is thought the average cyclist saves £285 a month on travel and a recent survey by Cyclescheme, found that 69 per cent of cyclists feel healthier and 54 per cent say their mental health has improved.

Keen rider Åsa Pamphilon from Chelmsford, who works in Chelmsford council’s Staff Travel Plan team has been selected to front the Cycle to Work Day scheme, now in its second year.

Åsa has been cycling for 40 years everyday, come rain or shine.

She said: “Cycling to work keeps me fit and saves me money.

“It may be hard to believe how much of a difference a morning cycle can make.

“Try it out on Cycle to Work Day this year and find out what it can do for you.”
