MOTORISTS are celebrating after the county council announced it will repair 50 crater pocked roads in and around Chelmsford.

The scheme forms part of 700 roads plan that will be targeted across the county as part of a £17.5million programme, which is expected to be completed by next March.

Mavis Ring, secretary of the Waterhouse Farm Residents‘ Association, said she and others on the Beachenlea and Westland estates, where one of the 50 roads – Nabbot Road – sits, are happy work will finally be done.

She said: “At long last, and it’s not before time!

“The road has been a disgrace for a long time now, and we’ve fought for this for just as long.

“We and the other residents are delighted to hear it.”

Councillors throughout Essex often say their number one complaint from residents is the state of the roads.

Roy Whitehead, the leader of Chelmsford Council, said: “I’m delighted that the list has been published.

“It now means residents are aware of what work will be undertaken and will be able to chase it up if it wasn’t to happen.

“It’s something we as a council have been pressing for so now it’s happening we’re pleased to see it going ahead.”

Councillor Rodney Bass, in charge of highways and transportation at County Hall, said: “These roads are in urgent need of repair and we are making the manpower available to get the job done. We have recently doubled the number of maintenance crews to 36 to bring the county’s roads up to standard as soon as possible.”
