A FAST food restaurant, usually found on the streets of America, is set to open on Moulsham Street.

Taco Bell, famous for its Mexican and Texan cuisine such as quesadillas, burritos and nachos, has applied to Chelmsford Council to install signs at 219 Moulsham Street, the site of the former Futon Company.

The store would become only the fourth in the UK, two of which are already in Essex, in Basildon and at Lakeside.

If permission is granted, the store will go next door to Cafe Rouge and Pizza Express.

Items on the menu include American classics such as the nachos bellgrande – a plate of nachos smothered in beans, beef, cheese and tomatoes.

The meal totals 760 calories.

The restaurant also offers a breakfast menu, where meals incluxde a waffle Taco filled with egg, sausage or egg and maple syrup.

Chelmsford councillor Dick Madden welcomed the news of another big chain coming to the city, and hopes it will create a number of jobs for local people.

Mr Madden said: “This is really exciting news. It will add to our cosmopolitan array of restaurants already available in Chelmsford.

“It’s also great because this will bring further employment to the retail and catering trade here.”

Terry King, who sits on the Moulsham Street Traders Committee, thinks there are too many places to eat on the street.

Mr King said: “It’s another food shop. We welcome brand names because they bring more footfall, but why always food? There are far too many eateries on Moulsham Street.”

He added: “We need more brand names, but not restaurants.”

Brand names on Moulsham Street include Tesco and Subway.

Fast food restaurants already in the city include two McDonalds and two KFCs. A Burger King closed on the High Street in September.
