CHELMSFORD has a new Mayor, and he can’t wait to get stuck into his new role.

Councillor Bob Villa, who represents the Great Baddow West, was sworn in at Wednesday night’s annual council meeting alongside his wife and new Mayoress Valerie.

He chose the Royal British Legion as his charity for the year, in recognition of the centenary of the Great War and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing.

Councillor Villa, who has previously been a governor at St Michael’s Junior School in Galleywood, said: “I am very proud and honoured to be elected Mayor of this enterprising, vibrant and proactive city.

“In my year as Mayor, representing Chelmsford as an ambassador, I hope to continue to promote the excellent work and achievements of the City Council.

“I look forward to meeting and communicating with the many voluntary groups, partnerships and businesses who do so much for the city, for without their help, the city would not be what it is today.”

The Mayor appointed Councillor Sandra Pontin to be his deputy and she will be supported by her husband John as her escort. Reverend Andrew Griffiths, of St Michael’s Church, was appointed as this year’s chaplain, and will open all meetings of the Council with prayers and officiate at various events.
