A RESTAURANT in Boreham is aiming to break the UK-record for the number of drive-thru customers in an hour to raise money for a meningitis charity in memory of a local girl who died from the disease.
The McDonalds at Boreham Interchange will host the event on Friday, May 16 between 5pm and 7pm. The most profitable hour will be donated to Meningitis Now.
The event comes following the death of 17-year-old Jodie Willan, of Boreham, who died in April 2010 after being given a 97 percent chance of full recovery after her diagnosis.
The “funny and giving” teenager initially fell ill with tonsillitis, but developed a headache and was not improving, so was rushed to hospital.
Doctors diagnosed viral meningitis and believed she would fully recover, but within 48 hours her parents began a bedside vigil.
The Sandon School A Level student’s condition rapidly deteriorated as she developed breathing difficulties.
Jodie, who had just passed her driving test, was sedated, but further scans revealed she was brain dead.
She died on April 30, 2010.
On the day of the record breaking attempt, a free lifesaving symptoms card and McDonalds sandwich will be given to each vehicle placing a drive thru order during the time.
