A MUSIC festival is coming to Chelmsford Cathedral next month as its centenary is celebrated.

The Cathedral Music Festival runs from Thursday May 8 to Sunday May 11 and has been specially organised to mark the venue’s 100th birthday.

Proceedings will be kicked off by chamber choir the Joyful Company of Singers who will perform songs composed by the likes of Elgar and Mendelssohn.

On the second day, members of Chelmsford Cathedral Choirs will be joined by past members of Brentwood School’s Big Band for a concert of work by jazz legend Duke Ellington.

Classic silent movies will be shown at the cathedral on Saturday accompanied by organ music in the background.

Then on the festival’s final day, the cathedral’s choir will perform songs by composers such as William Walton and Charles Villiers Standford as part of the regular Sunday church service.

A special festival lunch will follow the final event costing £35 per person.

Tickets prices for the other shows range between £12 and £20.
