FRESH fruit and veg straight from Spitalfields traders will be on sale at a new greengrocers in Chelmsford.

The store, simply called The Greengrocers, opened their doors for the first time last week at the Writtle Road Nursery.

On the shelves will be fruit and vegetables bought on the day to ensure good quality and freshness from the famous Spitalfields market in London every morning.

Jodie Simmons has started up the shop to offer people in Chelmsford an outlet to buy these products from somewhere else other than a supermarket.

She is also following in the steps of her relatives who have a greengrocing heritage.

Mrs Simmons said: “My family have been in the greengrocer industry for 40 years and my father, who is retired now, used to run stalls around Norfolk.

“One of my brother’s now runs his own stalls while another brother of mine works at Spitalfields so you could say it is in my blood.

“We just want to offer shoppers the chance to come into a shop where they can buy food which they know is fresh and bought on the day rather than stuff covered in plastic in a supermarket.

“There are plenty of people who want to make sure their families are eating quality produce and that is what we are offering here.”

Doors will be open at the shop from Thursday to Sunday every week and a service is being set up for free home deliveries in Chelmsford for orders worth £10 or more.
