SCHOOL children will be given lessons in cricket by a local team through a charity scheme.

Players from Springfield Cricket Club, based in Coronation Park, will travel around primary and secondary schools in the area to give pupils some coaching in the sport.

The sessions during the Spring and Summer terms will be done through the Cricket Foundation’s Chance To Shine programme.

The project aims to develop leadership and teamwork skills to children while learning to play the game at the same time.

Ken Godridge, manager of the Springfield’s colts section, said being involved in the project in the past has been great for local children cricketers and also the team.

Mr Godridge said: “As a direct result of our coaching sessions in schools we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of young players that are attending sessions at our club.

“It has also helped to increase the profile of our club and we have forged strong links with local schools.”
