Morrisons bring local store to Chelmsford city centre

11:00am Wednesday 29th January 2014

MORRISONS has arrived in Chelmsford High Street - creating 20 jobs.

Its M Local convenience shop opened on Monday in the former city centre Burger King.

It will open daily from 7am to 9pm offering groceries, a salad bar and hot food and drinks.

Pupils from Springfield’s Trinity Road Primary School helped cut the ribbon with shop staff saying they are ready to serve the city.

Store manager Sean Hartley, said: “We’re really pleased to be bringing Morrisons M local to Chelmsford and will work hard to be at the heart of the local community.

“We really want our store to be more than a place for fresh food, we want it to be a hub for local people and local events.”

Shoppers including Neil Gulliver, Chelmsford councillor responsible for economic development, have welcomed the opening.

Mr Gulliver, a Conservative, said: “When you look at the High Street currently, there isn’t really anywhere to go buy groceries.

“I know particularly for older people who rely on using the bus to travel around and want to pick up a couple of bags of food shopping, so this shop will provide a crucial service.

“I feel if they could find a suitable site in the city then Morrisons would open a second large store here because of the success retailers have here, but to have there presence on the High Street is great.”
