New WI group formed in Chelmsford

Chelmsford Weekly News: New City Girls WI committee members New City Girls WI committee members

JAM and Jerusulem will not be the only things discussed at a new Woman’s Institute in Chelmsford.

New City Girls WI will hold their first monthly meeting on Monday in Moulsham Street’s Cricketers pub starting at 7.30pm.

Alongside baking and crafts, members will be treated to activities not stereotypically linked with the organisation in future meets including a talk with a stuntwoman.

The WI has experienced a renaissance recently with a number of younger women starting groups.

Many members of New City Girls are in their 20s and 30s, but Thea Gaunt, 36, who helped establish the group said ladies of all ages can join.

The mum-of-two from Upper Roman Road, Chelmsford, said: “The WI is a powerful organisation and we hope to create a chance to learn from others and meet other people.

“We have had a lot of interest from women in their 20s to a lady in her 80s who emailed asking if she was too old to join us.

“It does not matter to us how old you are or what you do, we are trying to appeal to everyone.”

Sarah Kemp, 26, of Clyde Crescent, Chelmsford, has already signed up to be a member saying there are plenty of girls her age interested in the WI.

She said: “I think shows like Great British Bake Off have helped make it funky and trendy.

“Until recently I thought it was just an older person thing, but there is so much more to it.

“I’d recommend it to anyone and a lots of friends my age and younger who love their baking and crafts want to join.”

Becoming a WI member costs £34.70 annually and for more details email newcitygirls@live.com, tweet @NewCityGirlsWI or visit their Facebook page.
