A CAMPAIGN has been launched to introduce a 20mph limit near Admirals Park in Chelmsford.

Petitions are busily being signed in roads - including Park Avenue and Swiss Avenue.

There is concern about the amount of vehicles parked on the streets coupled with the speed some cars drive along there.

Matt Woodyatt, 40, of the Admirals Park Residents’ association leading the campaign, has already had 100 neighbours sign the petition. He says it is a miracle no fatal accidents have happened yet.

The father-of-three of Park Avenue said: “Drivers whizz down here so stupidly tailgating and trying to beat the traffic lights.

“It is so dangerous and people living here are concerned.

“My van has been hit a couple of times and there have been other accidents where cars have been written off on this road but thankfully nothing deadly.

“But with the speed and behaviour of people driving down here despite having lots of cars parked either side is ridiculous and we think making it 20mph here will help alleviate fears.”

The association also hope the idea will be taken to other parts of Chelmsford if successful.

Mr Woodyatt said: “We looked at having speed humps put in, but we thought it might be difficult to get the authorities to spend money so we pushed the 20mph zone instead.

“If we can bring this in, then what we would love to see is other residential parts of the city introduce it as well as it could have a powerful affect on safety.”
