Burlesque cabaret show wows Chelmsford
9:00am Saturday 2nd November 2013 in News
LADIES of all shapes and sizes showed off their burlesque dancing skills...and they loved every minute of it.
A cabaret show, involving about 100 women, was put on by the students of Burlesque Jems at the Triangle Club in Duke Street. Women wearing stockings, suspenders, feathers and corsets wowed a 100-strong audience.
Members from classes run in Chelmsford were joined by their colleagues from Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford and Basildon on the night performing a series of sultry dances.
The classes were set up by Jem Ayres in order to help women become more confident with themselves and their bodies, while learning to dance and keep fit at the same time.
One class member, Marilyn Fox, 45, said doing the dances makes her and all the other students feel very empowered when they perform.
She said: “I joined because I like performing and felt like giving dance a go.
“Burlesque Jems is all about body acceptance and enjoying being a woman.
“It is like a family here and I feel like I know all these women and can call on them when I need to. It is a wonderful feeling.”
Another dancer, Jules Brown, 54, encoraged more woman to give the classes a go.
“You don’t realise you’re exercising so it is perfect for people who cannot make the gym,” she said.
“There’s no bitchiness allowed in Burlesque Jems and I have never encountered any. I would urge anyone to come and give it a try.”
Along with the dancing, a number of stalls were set up selling cakes and gifts were also set up at the event.
