CYCLE fanatic Alan Johnson is one man who can’t wait for the Tour de France to come to Chelmsford, and he has firsthand experience of what the riders have to come.
Alan, 49, of Paradise Road, Writtle, took part in the annual L’étape du Tour, which allows amateur cyclists to ride one of the stages of the main Tour route.
Last year, he rode 125km from Annency to Mont Semnoz, which was 2012 stage 20 of the race.
Alan, who is keen to take part in next year’s race, said it was an amazing experience was fantastic despite the pain and cannot wait for the cyclists to pedal into Chelmsford.
He said: “Your respect for the professionals goes up enormously.
“You do the climbs they do and it is so difficult.
“I cramped up on one climb and you think the professionals have to do this day in day out. They are the fittest athletes in the world.
“I cannot wait for it to come to Chelmsford and I said to my wife I’m going to put a sign out on the route saying “reserved for the Johnsons”.
“For people that cycle around here, the roads where the Tour will be coming are roads we use all the time and to think the world’s best cyclists will be there is just great.”
