Pair's cycle ad business success

PEDALLING for business is an idea which two entrepreneurs have taken quite literally in Chelmsford.
In June, friends Roy Dovaston and Dan Slay launched their company Active Ads, which sees them use bicycles to advertise and deliver leaflets for other businesses.
The duo attach trailers with billboards on to the back of their bikes before going around the city.
Preparations for the company began in April this year when the pair began considering ways of promoting another firm run by one of them.
Mr Dovaston said: “I was looking for a unique way in which to advertise my online gifts business and the more we thought about the trailers and the possibilities and discussed the idea, the more we realised this would make a really unique form of advertising for local businesses.
“Me and Dan have always been interested in entrepreneurial ideas and when we saw the India Lounge restaurant launching in June, we made a point of convincing the owner to let us do a ten-day campaign for him, with great success.”
Reaction to the cycling billboards has been positive since they first started moving around, with the business partners finding ways of getting over logistical and legal problems.
“Cycling is not permitted, the bylaws of the High Street in Chelmsford wouldn’t allow this especially during the daytime hours we operate,” he said.
“Parking the bike and trailers in strategic positions on the high street and interacting with the public with flyers and leaflet distribution is more our thing.
“Passers-by are wowed and we’ve had numerous people stop just to talk about the ad-trailers. Usually, people will walk by and you’ll see them looking back. The whole concept definitely captures people’s imagination.”
