Plans for Chelmsford rail improvements discussed
8:00am Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
POLITICIANS and business owners met in Chelmsford to discuss ideas which could increase rail capacity around the city.
Priti Patel, MP for Witham, joined members of Chelmsford Council, Essex County Council, Greater Anglia and Network Rail to look at plans for rail changes in the future.
This includes the opening of a new station for Beaulieu Park in north Chelmsford, adding additional track north east of the city and a passing loop for trains to turn around on.
Representatives from Essex Chamber of Commerce and the Local Enterprise Partnership were also at the meeting held at the Civic Centre.
Speaking afterwards, the Conservative MP said the future looks bright for commuters and businesses needing to use trains around the city.
“Commuters, businesses and freight users are frustrated with the lack of capacity on our rail network,” she said.
“By investing in new tracks in this part of Essex we can increase capacity, speed up journey times and reduce delays.
“I am pleased that so many local organisations have come together to work towards developing the case for these vital upgrades to take place, which I will raise directly with the Chancellor of the Exchequer and other Government ministers.”
Roy Whitehead, leader of Chelmsford Council, said it is through the work of people like Mrs Patel the crucial track upgrades are coming together.
Mr Whitehead said: “Chelmsford was delighted to welcome Priti Patel to the city and have the opportunity to discuss with her and representatives of Network Rail the urgent need to get government to invest in improving the rail infrastructure in the East of England.
“I would like to thank Priti personally for her commitment and her desire to get the message across to the Treasury that the economic benefits that would flow from this investment would benefit the country as a whole.”
