Garden centre to close after 50 years
7:30am Saturday 28th September 2013 in News
A GARDEN centre is closing after more than 50 years due to competition from supermarkets and online retailers.
Plant Home Garden Centre, in Woodham Road, Battlesbridge, has customers from across Maldon, Burnham and Chelmsford.
Gill Blakesley and daughter Tara Eklund have owned the business for seven-and-a-half years, but there has been a garden centre on the site for more than 50 years.
All stock is currently on sale before it shuts on October 27.
Mrs Blakesley, 63, said: “It’s just the economic climate. It’s just too much since the recession.
“It’s not been very good with the onset of big places like Altons.
“The weather has not been good the past couple of springs and you make your money in the early summer.
“It’s a shame. One man has been here a long time.
“His wife’s family owned it.”
She said they also could not compete with cheap plants sold in supermarkets.
And she said customers are having to budget to pay their household bills and buying plants is a luxury.
“We have people come here from Maldon, Burnham and Chelmsford and all around. People come a long way to come here,” said Mrs Blakesley.
Three staff will lose their jobs and a buyer has not been found for the garden centre.
