Cricketers take on Bulgarian national team

CRICKETERS from Chelmsford got the chance to represent their country by taking on Bulgaria’s national team.
A squad from Springfield Cricket Club, who finished second in this season’s T-Rippon Premier League, flew out to Sofia for a tour which saw them play three matches in the country.
As part of their itinerary, the team, who play home games at Coronation Park, played the Bulgarian national side on Friday.
The match was won by the Eastern European hosts after Springfield were bowled out for 134 before Bulgaria’s batters reached the target with just one wicket lost.
Despite the heavy defeat, captain Jim Symonds said the match was enjoyable.
“They’re ranked 79th in the world, so they’re a bit higher than we’ve come up against before,” he said.
Other than the national team, Springfield also played a team from the British embassy and Sofia’s local side, tying and winning the matches respectively.
Visiting Sofia marked the 12th year the club has travelled out to the former Eastern Bloc for tours.
Previous destinations have included Prague, Bucharest, and Ljubljana.
Most of the grounds including Sofia use mats rolled on top of concrete or grass rather than a standard grass wicket.
However, Mr Symonds said this should not deter others from going on a cricket tour to these countries.
He added: “It’s out of this world. If I moved out here I wouldn’t think of starting a cricket club, so it is absolutely mental.
“The standard of teams we’ve played against has been pretty strong. We played against an English guy on Saturday who got 150 and would walk into our first team.”
