Channel swim for Charley, 12
7:30am Monday 26th August 2013 in News
A 12-YEAR-OLD girl from Chelmsford has braved swimming the English Channel to raise money for Papworth Hospital.
Charley Spriggs was the youngest member of a six-person relay, deciding she wanted to swim after seeing her dad take part three years ago.
The New Hall School pupil, who just qualified as old enough to take part in the swim after a recent birthday, is delighted to have raised more than £15,000.
She smashed the £10,000 target in aid of her grandad, who had life-saving lung surgery at Papworth Hospital.
The Year 8 student said: “When my grandad had lung cancer, Papworth Hospital saved his life so I just wanted to raise money to say thank you.”
“I am so pleased I’ve done it and can’t believe how much we’ve raised for Papworth. I didn’t think it was possible.”
She undertook the challenge at the end of July as part of the team named Charley and the Old Speedos.
Her parents Jon and Sascha both said they were extremely proud of their daughter’s determination to finish the challenge.
Jon, who was part of the relay, said: “I’m very proud as it was quite tough.”
