Wheelchair football sessions being held at Riverside
9:47am Tuesday 12th March 2013 in News
WHEELCHAIR users are being invited to try out a football game designed for them to play.
Essex County FA are hosting free PowerChair sessions at the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre in Chelmsford on the second Saturday of each month between 10am and 1pm.
The game is played with a larger ball played on a standard five-a-side sized pitch over two 20 minutes with teams of up to eight players, of which four are on field.
Newcomers who attend one of the sessions being put on by the FA will be shown some basic drills before being familiarised with match situations.
Ian Bent, senior football development officer at Essex County FA, said they want to see more people experiencing the sport.
Mr Bent said: “This has really taken off in Essex, but we want more people to be in a position to access this opportunity.
“The challenge we have is that we’re promoting provision that not many people have seen before.
“Our club is set-up with adapted electric wheelchairs along with attachments for players’ own wheelchairs.
“The sessions are completely free of charge and all the equipment is provided, so we hope to attract more members over the coming months.”
The sessions are open to people of all ages.
