£970K savings made in Chelmsford Council budget

Savings totalling £970,000 will be made across Chelmsford Council as part of their budget for 2013/14.

Councillors agreed on the financial plan for the next 12 months during a meeting at Central Baptist Church on Wednesday night.

Due to Government grant funding being slashed by £685,000 compared to last year, the authority has identified areas where money can be saved from services.

This includes a 25 per cent cut in funding for Easter and Summer holiday play schemes.

Council tax will also rise by an average of £3.32, roughly 6p a week.

Staff will be given a 1.25 per cent payrise while investment will be made available to improve facilities at the Chelmsford Athletics Centre, Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre, Hylands House and South Woodham Information Centre.
