Train services running through Chelmsford were hit with delays of up to an hour because of icy conditions.
An engine going through the city's rail station this morning broke down at about 6.30am on Thursday, causing major disruptions for commuters between Colchester and Liverpool Street.
Large crowds gathered in and outside the station throughout the rush hour period as they tried to make alternative routes to work while the faulty train remained static by the platform.
Service provider Greater Anglia has apologised for any inconvenience caused to passengers.
